It was a rainy Sunday morning when I found out the news. I went downstairs and reached for the first newspaper I could find on the kitchen table. I started flipping the freshly printed pages looking for something resourceful to read and absorb in history. I flipped and turned as usual when my mother walked in interuppting my history lesson. She mumbled about a Hanson advertisement she glanced at. I turned back around and had saw the page just staring at me that she spoke of. It was an advertisement about the release of the 'new but old' album "3 Car Garage" Hanson was promoting. It read: SPECIAL LIMITED OFFER at 3 Manhattan Cocoanuts Locations Only! STOP IN TODAY! PRE-ORDER Hanson's New Release 3 Car Garage for $12.99 CD or $8.99 Cass. and receive a FREE Pair of Tickets to See Hanson Perform Live Tuesday, May 5th at the Hamerstein Ballroom for MTV's "Live at the 10 Spot" (50 free pairs of tickets were available at each of the 3 Cocoanut locations that were listed.) Of course I was almost speechless when I read it. What was unusual about it was that I never rarely get the New York Post in the morning. It was almost like it was ment to be. I ran up the stairs and jumped on my parents bed disturbing my father who was almost half asleep. "Dad!" I screeched. You could hear the excitement in my voice. I continued, "There is this special offer that if we pre-order Hanson's new album, that I can [get] two free tickets to the [Live at the] 10 Spot concert for MTV!" I showed him the advertisement and he said, "Let's go then." I ran into my room finding any clothes laying around. After we were dressed, my father asked me to call each location and ask if there were any tickets left. I called the first Cocoanuts location which is on 51st and 6th Ave. with the number provided [(212)581-1669]. I was a bit angry when no one answered. I went to the next which is located on Lexington Ave, between 57 and 58 St. [(212)826-3500]. Thats when I got through. I asked if there were any tickets left and the person I spoke to said there were. I literally jumped for joy. I did not get to call the last location which was in Greenwich Village, 6th Ave. at 8th St. [(212)243-1446] though. It did not matter. I had a good feeling that I would get the tickets. We arrived to our destination and low and behold, I pre-ordered the album and got the tickets. I was so lit up inside. I couldn't wait to tell my friend Laura the awesome news. We arrived back on Staten Island and made a quick stop at my grandmothers house. I decided to call Laura from there because I couldn't wait any longer. She was shocked at first and had nothing to say. There I was babbling away about what happened and all she could say was, 'wow' and 'cool.' We were ready for our first Hanson concert experience. Her and I both were and still are into a lot of rock and that type of music genre. I don't know if Laura did, but I felt a bit weird going because I noticed a lot of the girls seemed a bit flaky and dumbfounded. I mean, no offense to anyone who is reading this, thats just what I thought about the whole thing at 'that' time. It turned out okay at the end. It was pretty cool. A lot of the girls were cool. The night finally came. Laura came over my house after school and we got ready while waiting for my dad to get home from work. We took pictures and got all we needed packed in a bag. We did make a poster and hardly raised it during the concert because we didn't want to block the view of girls behind us. We got to Hammerstein Ballroom (also known as the Manhattan Center) and got on line. We weren't to far away from the doors. Maybe about 10 yards. At that time, my dad just dropped us off and went to find parking and I didn't see him until the whole thing was over. Hanson finally showed up in a van and pulled up to the front. They ran out and I was only able to catch a glimpse of their hair. I guess I was fortunate to see that because there was a long ass line behind us. After Hanson was in, they started letting the masses of screaming girls in. We just couldn't wait. We got in the front entrance and they took our cameras from us--which sucked big time. I was tempted to sneak it in but I decided not to. I asked the security person that was there where I was showing hi my ticket. He pointed to the an that was aditting the people that would stand in front of the stage and my mouth fell to the ground. I turned to Laura and was showing her a huge smile. She did the same back. We went through and moved our way to the front. There were maybe three girls in front of us. We were on Isaac's side of the stage next to the gate that led backstage. I was talking to the gaurd there and of course asking him if he could let me go. I should have mentioned that my dad works for the Captains Association of the M.O.D. I was not thinking at the time I guess. At that time I still haven't seen my dad since he dropped us off. You could hear the sounds of that old rock 'n' roll Hanson says they were influenced by. Everyone started singing along, not as a whole crowd but just mimicing the lyrics to themself. All of a sudden, the girls start screaming and everyone looks up. Isaac was peeping out of a window above the stage to the right (as if you were facing the stage) with his Camcorder shooting all the fans. Taylor and Zac waved when Isaac pulled out. They then shut the shade and started sticking their hands out of the blind. Everytime they did, the screams got louder. I thought that was the worse of it. I was wrong. The lights turned low and the yells started even more. Laura and I did our share but we were dying from the noise. The music started and the ruble of music fell out unto the streets. Hands were raised and peoples mouth's were ajar and singing along to the music. The only thing that existed in the world at that time was the sweet yet severe sounds of music and the members who made it possible. It was amazing to see Hanson perform live. I thought it was fantastic. If only me or you who is reading this could feel what they were. I always embraced that single moment of what could be deescribed as nirvana (meaning a complete state of mind). Now, throughout the concert I was so happy when each guy looked at me. I am not saying they only looked at me because I was so beautiful or anything like that,--although, it made me feel that way. Okay, okay. This was the tear jerker. When the guys started singing "Weird" a capella, the girls around me were crying their eyes out. It almost felt like I was in one of those theropy clinics. The concert finally ended and as they let us out we got our cameras back. Laura and I finally found my father and it seemed as if he had a little adventure of his own. He told me that they ended up letting all the parents in and they stood in the back because I was shocked at the time because he was actually in the theater. Also, he told me he spoke to Mr Hanson. He never told me what about because I never asked really. Probably how crazy it is and things like that. I also saw Mr. Hanson as well. Girls were asking for his autograph, but he was like 'your here for them, not me' or something along those lines. He seemed pretty nice though, very tall and dark. If you glanced at him you wouldn't think he was a part of the Hanson family. | MTV | ||||||||||||||||
